Giuseppe Ghezzi (1634-1721)
The Holy Family with St. Anne

Oil on canvas
Chapel of St. Joseph
Church of Santa Maria della Scala, Rome

The painting's having been done for St. Joseph's chapel explains the prominence of the spouse of Mary, who holds the child up to the Father, "of whom all paternity in Heaven and earth is named" (Ephesians 3:15). Conversely, the painting exemplifies later images of an older St. Anne relegated to the shadows.
