St. Joseph

1685
Wood, polychrome
Chapel of St. Joseph, Cathedral of St. Mary, Pamplona, Spain

From the iconography of the Madonna and Child this statue borrows the throne, the mappa mundi orb, and the child himself, just learning to walk with the assistance of his father. With its sumptuous dress the image of the child has come a long way from the nakedness of the 15th century.
