The Life of St. Paul: Martyred in Rome

Circa 1857-60
Oil on canvas
Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, Rome

This is from a series of paintings by various artists that line the nave and transept of the basilica.

Though it is not in Acts, the widespread tradition summarized in the Golden Legend's Life holds that St. Paul was beheaded in Rome at the order of Nero.
