The Life of St. Paul: Paul is Warned about the Jerusalem Mob

Circa 1857-60
Oil on canvas
Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, Rome

This is from a series of paintings by various artists that line the nave and transept of the basilica.

In Jerusalem, James and the presbyters warn Paul about rumors that he has been urging Jews to abandon Moses and not circumcise their children. They suggest a public display of fidelity to the old laws: sponsor four Jews who have taken the Nazirite vow. Paul agrees. See Acts 21:18-26 for the episode, Numbers 6:1-21 for the vow.
