In the left panel the saint distributes his wealth to the poor; in the middle, he leaves the monastery to find St. Paul the Hermit; on the right, he encounters a "hippocentaur" who directs him on his way to St. Paul. The left panel is based on Golden Legend #21; the middle and right panels, on the Legend's life of St. Paul the Hermit, #15.
