Master Radovan, The Resurrection

Mid-13th century
Relief
West tympanum, Cathedral of St. Lawrence, Trogir, Croatia

In Mark (16:1-8) and Luke (24:19) three women take spices and perfumed oils to the tomb on Sunday morning to anoint Jesus. When they arrive they are told by one (in Mark) or two (in Luke) men clothed in white that "he has been raised; he is not here." The sculpture covers two moments: on the right, the women are en route to the tomb; in the middle, Jesus "has been raised" despite the three soldiers who were set to guard the tomb.

Above the tomb an angel with long, curly tresses censes the tomb. The same angel also censes the baptism of Jesus at the right base of the outer band.
