Master Radovan, Jesus' Entry into Jerusalem

Mid-13th century
West tympanum, Cathedral of St. Lawrence, Trogir, Croatia

Jesus approaches Jerusalem from the left holding a large hand cross. Ahead of him one man lays out a cloak and two others cut tree branches to strew on the road. Usually such trees are pictured, or rarely palms. But here the leaves look more like mountain laurel, too small to be palm leaves and too big to be olive.
