second tier from the top of the retablo of the main
altar. Christ The beard is a different color than the hair. The statue is badly chipped and has lost the thumb and pinkie of the left hand. Several fingers have been reattached. Location: South nave (see note) Unidentified Saint Hands pressed together as in prayer. Location: On a retablo in the second bay in the north wall of the nave (see note). Unidentified Female Saint The figure's left hand holds the book to the left thigh. There are a few glints of what seems to be the gold of polychrome, but the statue is very dusty. Basis for Identification: Long
hair, veil, closed book in hand. Location: Left
end of the second tier from the top of the retablo of
the main altar.
Unidentified Saint The saint gazes at the open palm of the left hand, which presumably once held an object of some sort. Location: Bottom left of the retablo of the main altar. Media and construction: Gold
halo. Polychrome. Size: 4½ feet (135 cm.) Unidentified Saint
Basis for Identification: The figure holds a closed book at the hip; on the book is a church. Location: Right end of the third tier from the top of the retablo of the main altar. Media and construction: Polychrome. Size: 4½ feet (135 cm.) Unidentified Saint The polychrome is exceptionally beautiful. A book, which looks real, is tied to the left hand. The right hand is poised as if it once held a staff or other object. Basis for Identification: Gold halo, book in hand. Location: Bottom right of the retablo of the main altar. Media and construction: Polychrome. Size: 4½ feet (135 cm.) San Pedro Apóstol Location: In a glass case in the upper section of
the retablo in the first bay of the south wall of the
nave (see note). Unidentified
Dominican The church in the saint's hand has a boxy look, with at least one tower. The right hand is unusually large. Basis for Identification: Habit, church held in left hand. Location: Left end of the third tier from the top, retablo in second bay in the north wall of the nave (see note). Media and construction: Wood,
gesso, paint. Size: 4 feet (120 cm.) Unidentified Saint There is much dust on the statue. Media and construction: Apparently
polychrome. Size: 4½ feet (135 cm.) Location: Right end of the top tier of the retablo of the main altar. Crucifix Local name: El Señor de la Misericordia. Location: South chapel (see note). Note: On
this
site,
references to the cardinal directions always assume
that the main altar is at the east end of the church,
the narthex or entry area at the west end, and the two
walls
of the nave on the
north and south. (The
nave is the long central section.)
