Saints Peter and Paul? |
Saint Peter and Saint Paul? Basis for Identification: Two male
saints situated at the apex of a retablo in the Church
of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The saint on the right
seems to be holding in his right hand what could be a
sword, the most common attribute of St. Paul. Site: Church of San Pedro y San
Pablo, Teposcolula. Location: Upper center of a retablo at the north end of the transept (see note). Comparable santos in Oaxaca (St.
Peter): Coixtlahuaca,
Etla, Huitzo, Mitla, Díaz
Ordaz,
Tamazulapan, Teitipac1,
Teitipac2,
Teotitlán1,
Teotitlán2, Teposcolula1, Yanhuitlán. Comparable santos in Oaxaca (St.
Paul): Etla, Mitla1, Mitla2, Huitzo, Teposcolula1. External Links (St. Peter): External Links (St. Paul): Previous santo Introduction to Teposcolula Note: On this site, references to the cardinal directions always assume that the main altar is at the east end of the church, the narthex or entry area at the west end, and the two walls of the nave on the north and south. (The nave is the long central section.) Actual orientations may differ. Some churches are shaped like a cross; the "arms" of the cross constitute the transept.
