Master Morata
Passion Altarpiece: Detail, The Agony in the Garden

See Matthew 26:36-47, Mark 14:32-43, Luke 22:39-47. After the Last Supper, Jesus and the apostles go to the Garden of Gethsemane, where the latter fall asleep while Jesus prays, "Father, all things are possible to thee: remove this chalice from me; but not what I will, but what thou wilt" (Mark 14:36). In Luke 22:43 an angel then appears, "strengthening him." This panel shows the prayer, the sleeping apostles, the angel presenting the "chalice," and Judas at the garden gate, about to enter with one of the soldiers who will arrest Jesus in the next panel.

The gospels locate the garden outside of the city, so the background shows Jerusalem, one of its gates, and people going about their business unaware of the unfolding drama.
