Master Morata, Passion Altarpiece (Left Side)

Aragon, circa 1470-1505
Tempera and gold on wood
The Cloisters, New York City (gift of George Blumenthal, accession numbers 11.3.1 and 35.35.19)

This is the left half of an altarpiece. The fate of the right half is unknown. The main register comprises six scenes from the Passion of Christ; the lower register, six Apostles with scrolls bearing phrases from the Apostles' Creed. For details about the altarpiece, see the pages for the following panels:

In these panels Jesus' halo is a set of raised concentric circles without the traditional cross that distinguishes the Divinity from angels and saints. This unusual practice is also seen in the Master Morata's Virgin and Child with Scenes from the Life of the Virgin, in the Metropolitan Museum. (The name "Master Morata" is given by art historians to this artist, but his real name is unknown.)
