Gian Cristoforo Romano
St. Vincent of Saragossa

1505
Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo

Here St. Vincent wears a dalmatic and carries a closed book. Unusually, his attribute is a ship rather than one of the instruments described in his passion. (The legend has it that his body was tied to a millstone and thrown from a ship at sea but nevertheless found its way to shore, where it was given an honorable burial.)

This is part of a larger relief of SS. Vincent, Catherine of Alexandria, and Anthony of Padua. The saints are identified by a label at the church.
