Jacopo Torriti, The Dormition

13th century
Mosaic
Apse, Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore

Christ carries the soul of his mother into a Heaven populated by angels and haloed saints. St. John weeps on the other side of the deathbed while St. Peter swings a censer and the ten other apostles attend to the left and right. On the far right are women mourners; on the far left, mourners from the clergy, including two prelates wearing the white palliums of their office. In the foreground before the bier are three smaller figures: two Franciscans and one in a red garment and white cap.
