Jacopo Torriti
The Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary: Detail, the saints on the left

13th century
Mosaic
Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome

As can be seen from the inscriptions, the three large figures are St. Francis (Franciscan habit, tonsure), St Paul (long, pointy beard and receding hairline), and St. Peter. The latter is without his customary keys. Though blurred in this photograph, his scroll reads TU ES CHRISTUS FILI DEI VIVI. "You are the Christ, the son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16).

The small figure of the kneeling Pope is Nicholas IV, one of the two donors. The other donor, Jacopo Colonna, is in the corresponding position on the right.
