St. Peter Baptizing the Centurion Cornelius

1709
Oil on canvas
Pinacoteca Civica di Jesi, Ancona, Italy

The conversion of the centurion Cornelius is related in Acts 10:1-49. St. Peter is depicted with the traditional short, square beard but without his keys. He baptizes Cornelius by pouring a little water over him from a small bowl, a practice common in 1709 but less so in the early Christian centuries. (See Senn, 94.)
