Santiago Matamoros

14th Century
Manuscript illustration
Museum of Pilgrimages, Santiago de Compostela, Spain

This is a copy of a page from the 12th-century Codex Calixtinus, which treats mostly of St. James, his miracles, and the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. It pictures the saint as he will be in countless later images, leading Christians into battle. However, it does not portray a conquered Moor.
