The Deposition
13th century
Wood, polychrome
Huelgas Monastery, Burgos, Spain
Mary and John stand at left and right in attitudes of grief that are characteristic of the new emphasis on pathos in medieval Crucifixions. Mary wears the usual blue mantle, and John is as usual pictured as a youth with no beard. Jesus' skirt was common in crucifixion images before the late 14th century. In Hispanic regions both the skirt and the round beams of the cross continued into later centuries.
