Francisco de Zurbarán
St. Casilda

1630-35
Oil on canvas, 68 x 42 inches (173 x 107 cm.)
Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid (1979.26)

St. Casilda holds a collection of roses in the folds of her capacious skirt. In her legend she was taking bread to the Christian prisoners of her Saracen father, but when the father intercepted her she claimed she was only carrying roses. Miraculously, when the father looked the bread had turned into roses.

As the daughter of a king the saint is pictured in sumptuous clothing and a coronet.
