The Sarcophagus of Adelphia
Detail, The Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes

See Matthew 14:13-21 and 15:32-39, Mark 6:34-44, Luke 9:10-17.

With 5,000 people to feed and only five loaves and two fishes, Jesus blesses the loaves with his right hand and the fish with his left. Then there is enough for all. In the image, the baskets at his feet are the leftovers. The loaves have crosses on them, a reference to the Eucharist.

The two men on either side of Jesus represent the Apostles who were charged with distributing the food. Like Jesus, they wear tunics and pallia. The one on the left may be Peter, although his beard is a bit less square than in the scene with Jesus and the rooster.
