St. Paul

Mid-12th century
Mosaic
Church of Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio
("The Martorana"), Palermo, Sicily

Both eastern and western images of St. Paul give him sandals, a receding hairline, and a long, tapered beard. In Orthodox images such as this one (the church was built by a court official who was Orthodox), he may hold the fingers of his right hand in the blessing configuration.

The Greek inscription, Ó ΑΓΙΟS ΠΑVΛOC, simply means "Saint Paul."
