The Entry into Jerusalem

12th-13th century
Mosaic
Cathedral of the Assumption, Monreale, Sicily

As usual Jesus enters from the left on an ass with his disciples while people spread garments and branches on the path before him. The Jerusalem crowd waves palm branches as in John 12:13. Usually the branches are from olive trees, but this time they are cast down from a palm, as is emphasized by the inscription RAMOS PALMARUM, "palm branches."
