St. Andrew and the Five Loaves
12th -13th century
Mosaic
Cathedral of the Assumption, Monreale, Sicily
Andrew is identified by the wild hair and slightly forked beard. In John 6 Jesus asks how they will feed the large crowd that has come to hear him. Andrew says there is a boy in the crowd who has five loaves and two fishes. The mosaic shows Andrew delivering the five loaves to Jesus, who is already "multiplying" them: one extra in his right hand and another in his left.
St. Peter stands behind Jesus with the short, square beard that is his attribute; behind him stand other apostles.
