Master of the Predella of the Ashmolean Museum, The Annunciation to St. Joachim

Circa 1370-75
Tempera and gold on wood
Pinacoteca Vaticana, Rome

The image closely follows the legends. Expelled from the Temple for being childless, Joachim lives for a while in the hills with his shepherds. An angel finally comes and tells him to return to his wife Anne at the Golden Gate. In the background Anne is pictured at their home; the angel will see her next.
