Jacob Gains His Father's Blessing

12th-13th century
Mosaic
Cathedral of the Assumption, Monreale, Sicily

The mosaic pictures the key moments in Genesis 27:5-40. At left Esau returns from hunting with a rabbit for the stew he plans to make his father Isaac before receiving his blessing. In the center Rebecca brings Jacob a substitute stew to present to Isaac and thus receive the blessing before Esau can return. On Jacob's hand is a piece of fur that will make the blind Isaac think he is touching Esau's hairy hand.
