God Calls Noah

12th-13th century
Mosaic
Cathedral of the Assumption, Monreale, Sicily

God is represented only by his hand reaching from Heaven, even though previous panels have shown him as a full-length figure. The inscription is precepit dominus ad noe dicens fac tibi arcam de lignis levigatis, "God commanded Noah saying, ‘Make thee an ark of gopherwood.’" God's words are quoted from Genesis 6:14.
