Workshop of Francesco Laurano, The Creation of Eve

15th century
Detail from a Pietà relief
Palazzo Bellomo, Syracuse, Sicily

As in Genesis 2, God puts Adam to sleep and then fashions Eve from Adam's rib. The image is evidence of the late-medieval willingness to picture God the Father as an old man with a substantial beard. The halo, like Christ's, is inscribe with a cross.
