Easter Candle Stand: Top Tier, View 4

Circa 1170
St. Paul Outside the Walls, Rome

This tier has the Resurrection on one side and the Ascension on the other. In this view Christ ascends into Heaven in a mandorla held by angels. As usual in such images, he blesses the viewer with his right hand. In this case as in some others, his left hand holds a scroll. The horizontal band behind the figure most likely represents a throne, another feature seen from time to time in Ascension mandorlas.
