Abraham and Isaac

12th-13th century
Mosaic
Cathedral of the Assumption, Monreale, Sicily

This image has all the details typical of this iconographic type: the mountain, the servants, the ass, Abraham with his sword, Isaac bound on a flaming altar, an angel (sometimes it is God's hand) telling Abraham to desist, and the ram caught in brambles. The inscription gives God's words in Genesis 22:11-12, abraham abraham ne extendas manum tuam super puerum, "Abraham, Abraham…Lay not thy hand upon the boy."
