St. Raymond Nonnatus

Church of Sant'Eustachio, Rome

The red biretta that St. Raymond wears here is a mark of his status as a cardinal. The palm branch identifies a martyr: in this case the saint did not actually suffer death for his faith, but in his time in Algiers he did risk death many times and suffered torments at the hands of the authorities.

The vita edited in the Acta Sanctorum (August vol. 6, 737-46) says nothing about a monstrance. Perhaps the artist intended it as a symbol of Raymond's preaching.
