The Cubicle of the Sacraments

Catacombs of Saint Calixtus

This is the back wall of the cubicle. Above, the figure framed by the two doves is Jonah, reclining as under the gourd tree. Directly below, in the center of this photo, is a Eucharistic banquet. To the left of the banquet, a priest extends his hands in a symbolic epiclesis while a worshipper stands in the orant posture.

To the right of the banquet is a scene with the sacrifice of Abraham:

Elements from the narrative are arranged left to right: Isaac, Abraham, the ram, the bush, the faggots. The orant poses echo the other figures in the fresco and possibly refer to Abraham and Isaac's reception of God's pronouncement.

The figures on the far right and far left carry shovels and wear white tunics.
