Master Morata
Passion Altarpiece: Detail, The Buffeting

Aragon, circa 1470-1505
Tempera and gold on wood
The Cloisters, New York City (gift of George Blumenthal, accession numbers 11.3.1 and 35.35.19)

See Matthew 26:67-68, Mark 14:65, and Luke 22:63-65. After Caiaphas determines that Jesus has blasphemed, his servants strike him repeatedly and the servants tauntingly tell him to "prophesy" who struck him.

Caiaphas appears to be the man directly behind Jesus, in a headpiece resembling a mitre.
