St. John the Baptist Bearing Witness
Oil on copper
Metropolitan Museum of Art, gift of Fabrizio Moretti & Adam Williams, 2009.252
The painting illustrates John 1:29-34. John sees Jesus approaching and cries out, "Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who taketh away the sin of the world." The text then continues with John's account of his vision of the dove when he baptizes of Jesus and his conclusion "that this is the Son of God" (1:34).
