The Autun Tympanum: Detail, The Psychostasy

The Psychostasy is the weighing of souls on the day of judgment. Usually Christian images have Satan interfering with the process in order to get souls he is not entitled to. But in this case the point is the contrast between St. Michael's tender acceptance of a saved soul and the devil's violent taking of a damned soul, who resembles him.
