The unusual feature of this painting is the bell above St. Jerome's head. Conceivably, it could refer to Jerome's regularizing of "the office and ordinal of the church" (i.e., the Divine Office, the sequence of daily prayers said by the clergy), which the Golden Legend says he completed at the request of Pope Damasus I.
