In the Golden Legend, on her wedding night St. Cecilia counsels her new husband Valerian to find Pope Urban and be baptized. He does, and when he returns an angel gives each of them a crown of roses and lilies.

The painting is one of a pair of panels by an unknown Italian master. The other half has St. Francis receiving the stigmata.
