Some scholars say this is a Last Supper image, citing the way the disciples are arranged in a half-circle as they are in undisputed Last Supper images of the time. Others say it represents Christ teaching his disciples. There does not seem to be any food in evidence. The pinched-edge square behind him should be the back of a throne, and the object in his right hand looks to be a scroll. Both of these would signify his authority as a teacher.

Paleo-Christian images of the Last Supper rarely represent all twelve of the disciples who were in attendance. This image has nine.
