The Trinity as "Throne of Mercy"

Main figure probably 18th century
Wood, gesso, paint; fabric scutum and loincloth on crucifix; painted eyes; approx. 3 feet tall.
Church of San Juan, Teitipac, Oaxaca, Mexico

This was a common way of picturing the Trinity from the 14th through the 16th centuries. The Father, here represented with the triple crown of the papacy, offers his crucified son to the contemplation of the viewer, while the Holy Spirit rests atop the cross.

In the same glass case is a smaller Trinity, partly visible at the left of the picture.
