The Dormition of the Virgin

15th century
Icon, 7 x 4½ in (18 x 11.5 cm.)
British Museum

As Christ hands Mary's soul to the angel in red, the Apostles perform the Office of the Dead, one of them swinging a censer while Peter, wearing an omophorion, an Orthodox liturgical vestment, a white band adorned with large crosses worn about the neck and shoulders brings a service book.

Perhaps the figure above Christ's mandorla is a seraph?
