The Martyrdom of St. Jude

15th century
Stadelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt

This painting illustrates the martyrdom of Simon and Jude as recounted in the Golden Legend. To bring about the conversion of the people in "Suamar" the apostles command the devils inhabiting the city's idols to come out and show themselves. When they do, the people see that they have been worshipping "Ethiopians, black and naked," so they break the idols into pieces. Angered at this, the pagan priests "ran upon the apostles and hewed them to death."
