Bartolomeo Veneto
Jael

First third of the 16th century
Private Collection, Milan

Dressed as a contemporary aristocrat, Jael holds a claw hammer, reflecting Judges 5:26, "She put her left hand to the nail, and her right hand to the workman's hammer, and she struck Sisara.…" Unusually, the artist does not include the nail. Are we to take it that she has it in the purse under her left hand?

The paper resting on the purse reads, "Bartolameo de venecia f[ecit]," "Bartolomeo de Venetia made this."
