Rufillus of Weissenau
St. Hilary of Poitiers Revives the Dead Infant

12th century
Manuscript illumination from Codex Bodmer 127, 144r
Fondation Martin Bodmer, Geneva

The Golden Legend's account of this miracle has Hilary lying down in the dust and praying beside the dead body until the two of them rise together (Ryan I, 88), a narrative surely inspired by Elijah's resurrection of a boy in 1 Kings 17:17-22. But in this manuscript he simply recalls the child to life at the urging of its mother (145v), and in the miniature even the mother is omitted.

See Michon for a study of Brother Rufillus's illustrations in this manuscript.
