Pelegrinus, The Traditio Legis

Circa 1130-39
Stone relief
Castelvecchio Museum, Verona, Italy

Identified by the museum label as "Christ between Saints Peter and Paul," this is clearly a Traditio Legis image. On the left St. Peter has received the keys from Christ, who raises his hand to bless the viewer. On the right St. Paul receives a book representing the New Law on which his letters expounded.

The inscription above the scene reads, ✯ sum deus et factor celi terre que creavi. The que is a mystery to me; otherwise the inscription means "I am God, the maker of heaven and earth, which I created." The other inscriptions involve some most un-medieval boasting on the part of the artist. In the lower left corner he identifies himself as "Pelegrinus" and in the inscription on the arch he says he has sculpted this work and donated it.
