Christoph Anton Mayr, St. Michael Vanquishing Satan
1760
Vault fresco
Parish church of St. Michael, San Candido / Innichen, Italy
The guide brochure at the church gives this interpretation of the image:
In the vault fresco, we see St. Michael slaying the many-headed dragon, the symbol of evil; on the left, humanity before its fall from grace and, to the right, the conversion and repentance of the fallen mankind. The allegory of peace is depicted above the image of Adam and Eve, the allegory of self-knowledge above a group of penitents and Mary and God the Father above St. Michael.
