Filippo Lippi, The Assumption and Annunciation with Aquinas Presenting Cardinal Carafa to Our Lady: Detail, the apostles

1489-92
Fresco
Chapel of the Annunciation
Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome

These are two details from the large fresco, The Assumption and Annunciation with Aquinas Presenting Cardinal Carafa to Our Lady. Two groups of apostles stand at the base of the larger image, flanking the Annunciation inset but gazing up at the ascending Virgin Mary. In the detail on the left, the sarcophagus in which she had lain is partly visible in the lower right corner.

Only eleven apostles are pictured, following an ancient tradition that St. Thomas was absent at the time.
