Peter of Verona and his companion Dominic were ambushed and killed while on their way from Como to Milan. The assailants had been hired by a group of Cathars because of Peter's zealous preaching against their beliefs. Having fallen to the ground, the saint uses his finger to write the word Credo, "I believe," in the dirt. The word is the beginning and conventional name of the "Nicene Creed," a prayer deeply contrary to Catharist teachings.
