Noli Me Tangere: St. Mary Magdalene and the Resurrected Jesus

1440s
Fresco
Convent of San Marco, Florence, Italy

Behind Mary Magdalene is the tomb from which Jesus had arisen earlier in the day. The hoe or shovel that he carries is not directly a part of the gospel narrative (John 20:14-17) but a reminder of Mary Magdalene's misprision. At first she thought he was a gardener. His gesture with his right hand reflects his words, "Do not touch me, for I am not yet ascended to my Father."

The fresco is in one of the cells on the upper floor of the monastery.
