Fra Angelico and Assistants
The Flagellation of Christ

1440s
Fresco
Convent of San Marco, Florence, Italy

This fresco is on a wall in one of the individual friars' cells in the convent. It pictures St. Peter Martyr (identified by the gash in his head) scourging himself while contemplating the scourging of Jesus, surely an invitation for the occupant of the cell to follow suit.

The woman on the left wears the same flowing purple garment seen on the Virgin Mary in this fresco in a nearby cell.
