José Bernardo de la Meana
St. Leocadia

Circa 1753-62
Ambulatory, Cathedral of St. Savior, Oviedo

In Toledo in 304 St. Leocadia died of the wounds she suffered when tortured for renouncing the pagan gods. The few images of her that I have seen do not use attributes other than the palm branch, though two have her holding a cross aloft as if preaching the faith.

A brief passio of St. Leocadia that Butler (IV, 524) calls "quite untrustworthy" appears in España Sagrada, VI, 315-17. Her feast day is December 9. She is the patron saint of Toledo.
