The Frauenkirche Ecce Homo: Detail, St. Afra

This portrait of St. Afra is in the predella. In the year 304 in Augsburg, the Roman judge Gaius had his servants strip St. Afra, tie her to a stake, and set a fire beneath her. This image clothes her modestly, renders the stake as a column, and spells her name Afera. Afra's feast day is August 5. Her story is in Butler (III, 267-68) and in MHG: Scriptores Rerum Merovingicarum, III, 41-64 and VII, 192-204.
