The Lamb of God

6th century
Mosaic
Basilica of San Vitale, Ravenna

The central wreath is supported by angels in the four quadrants. Among the leaf designs surrounding them are rams, stags, and peacocks – creatures traditionally used as symbols of Jesus Christ. The Lamb in the very center also represents Jesus, the "Lamb of God." The wreath encircling it bears fruits that resemble figs.
